It’s the Church Stupid

Okay cut me some slack…titles are hard to come by.

But I am someone who loves the local church. I love how she works and how God accomplishes his purposes through people that are less than perfect and through systems and structures that are built sometimes to actually get in the way of progress. I love seeing God’s purposes accomplished through the church.

And yet, I know MANY people, Christian people, who could care less about the church. They have been hurt by the church; their needs haven’t been met by the church; they don’t need the church to worship….on and on the reasons go. And so they don’t go…to church. They aren’t connected to being the church.

So it’s passages like this one in Ephesians 3 that just blow my mind. (And, for any of my Christian, non church attending friends, who are reading – this is huge)
10 His (God) intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gods eternal purposes are accomplished through the church! Yes, our church – full of weak, lukewarm, hypocritical, foolish people to more fully show God’s wisdom and power to all.

It’s through “the church” that the secret is told to the world – Jesus has made a way to the Father that anyone can come through. Through the cross, Jesus purchased new life for all. That is the mission of the church – to tell the story, to live the truth of the story, so that the wisdom of God is made known to all.

I imagine the first question from a ‘non-attending friend’ would be “How do you define church?”

The church (ekklesia) defines itself as a gathering.
